| 04/08/2016 | Reporting Errors in the Coghlan et al report 2015 Coghlan and co-authors recently published a paper entitled “Combined DNA, toxicological and heavy metal analyses provides an auditing toolkit to improve pharmacovigilance of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)” (the report/paper) (http://www.nature.com/articles/srep17475 accessed on 22 December 2015). They claimed that among the 26 legally purchased traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), “92% of the TCMs examined were found to have some form of contamination and/or substitution”. The subsequent media release of the report caused alarm within the Australian community. While we are pleased that researchers are investigating the very important issue of safety and quality of TCM products, we are writing to express our concerns about some reporting errors and therefore conclusions reached in this paper. |
